It was the last day of the camping trip and Ryan didn’t want to go home just yet. “I really want to take one more hike,” he begged his dad. Finally, his dad agreed and Ryan grabbed his backpack and whistled for Max, his dog, to come along.

Ryan was walking through the woods enjoying nature around him, when he heard a cry for help. It was coming from the cliffs next to the woods. Ryan worried what he would find when he got there. A man had fallen down a short way but was hanging onto a small ledge. As Ryan quickly assessed the situation, his heart started to race. He knew that the man was depending on him to save his life, and Ryan hoped he was strong enough to do it.

Ryan nervously grabbed a vine that was nearby and pulled on it to check its strength. Throwing the vine down, he realized that it was slightly short and that he would have to sit down over the edge of the cliff for the vine to reach the man. With sweat drops forming on his skin, Ryan told the man to grab hold of the vine so he could pull him up. As the man grabbed the vine, Ryan pulled with all of his might to lift the man off of the ledge. Luckily, the vine held and the man was safe. Ryan breathed a sigh of relief. He knew he had been scared, but he had not frozen with fear. He felt good that he was able to push through his fear and make a difference in someone’s life.
