A student is writing an argumentative report about the importance of sleep. He found possible sources for his report. Read the sources and the
directions that follow.
Source 1: "Study Shows Sleep Cleans the Brain" by Georgiana Walsh-Cook, science reporter
In 2013, researchers from University of Rochester Medical Center and New York University studied mice to investigate the purpose of sleep.
Previous research has shown that when the brain is used for tasks, it produces wastes. This waste can build up in the brain and interfere with
electrical activity and thought processes. The researchers discovered that the brain removes waste by "washing" itself from fluid from the
spinal cord. They also found that the mice's brains were most active while sleeping, suggesting that this cleaning process occurs during sleep. Just
after waking, the mice's brains showed the lowest concentration of waste products of any time during the day. The concentrations reached their
highest levels when the mice were ready to sleep again.
Source 2: "Another Reason You Need Sleep" by Ashton Glickmann, health reporter
Do you have trouble remembering and thinking when you have not slept enough? Researchers have found a possible explanation; sleep is the time
when your brain does its daily cleaning, removing the chemical waste created by thinking and doing other tasks. Unfortunately, if brain waste is
not removed, it slows mental activity. The electrical signals that travel from brain cell to brain cell slow down. Fortunately, sleep helps clean out
the brain after a long day of use.
The student wrote some claims to use in his report. Look at the claims in the table. Decide if the information in Source 1, Source 2, both sources,
or neither source supports each claim. Click on the box that appropriately describes each claim. There will be only one box selected for each claim.
Source 1 Source 2 Both Sources Neither Source
Claim 1:
In order to have a healthy brain, people should get enough sleep.
Claim 2:
To protect the brain from high amounts of waste, avoid thinking too much.
Claim 3:
A brain has the most chemical waste right before sleep.
