Shopping in grocery stores used to be very different than it is today. Customers would hand a list of items to a clerk. The clerk would gather the items and put them in bags. Sometimes a clerk would deliver the groceries. In 1910, Clarence Saunders changed the way grocery stores worked. He opened the first self-service grocery store. Saunders named his store the Piggly Wiggly. At the Piggly Wiggly, customers could walk up and down aisles to gather their own items.
