Review the National Library of Medicine's Evaluating Health Information on Web Tutorial. In at least two paragraphs, describe how you can evaluate these components of a website:
a) provider and purpose, b) information quality, and c) privacy. (Links to an external site.)
There are six major criteria that may be used to evaluate health information found on the internet. Credibility, Content, Disclosure, Links, Design, and Interactivity are the factors to consider. If you need to make a critical medical choice, back up what you read in the local paper with information from a doctor and other reliable sources. Also, observe when the information was last updated or when the Web page was published. You can determine the product's quality by reading the labels and determining what ingredients are contained in the product or supplement. To ensure that you are purchasing a safe product, check to see if the product has been approved by the FDA or the National Poison and Drugs Center.
