After several weeks of drivers filling out paperwork, Hugh asked to meet with Philip again.
Hugh said, "Phil, look. I know you're upset about the new policy, and so are the other drivers. To tell you the truth, so am I. I don't want to see you guys miss out on bonus money, and I really don't want our customers getting upset because you're not able to be as efficient with deliveries. The problem that we have is the clerks' union. If we can't find a way of dealing with their contract, we have to have you guys do more paperwork."
Philip said, "Well, I appreciate that you don't like the change either. But what can we do about it?"
Hugh replied, "Before I went into management, I was a driver too, and I did a lot of work with the drivers' union. I still know some folks there. Maybe we can ask them to talk with the clerks' union about changing the contract. They might respond well if they realize their contract hurts not just the company, but other workers."
Philip said, "I like that idea, and I'll see if I can get support from the other drivers. It's good to know that you understand our position, since you've been there. And we both want to see this policy change, so I guess we're working toge
