The term "vernacular" is used to identify O the differences between historical and modern syntax and vocabulary standard forms of a language, usually the forms spoken by people with wealth and prestige. vocabulary that used to form a part of a lexicon of a language, but no longer does, due to language shift non-standard or stigmatized forms of a language, also may be called a "dialect"​
