The glossopharyngeal nerve (cranial nerve IX) arises from the medulla oblongata, and runs to the throat. It is a mixed motor and sensory functions that -
O has a sensory function of taste and its motor fibers are parasympathetic fibers that run to the heart, lungs, and most visceral organs
O functions only to carry afferent impulses for vision.
O innervates the posterior one-third of the tongue and pharynx which allows swallowing to occur. It also conducts taste and general sensory impu tongue and pharynx.
O directs the motion of the eyeball medially and inferiorly.
