"WHY WE DON'T LISTEN BETTER"
(2) Most people listen carefully only a small percentage of the time. (3) Sad as it may be, it is impossible to listen well all the time, for several reasons we'll outline here. (4) Message Overload (5) The first reason is that the amount of speech that most of us encounter every day makes it impossible to listen carefully to everything we hear. (6) Many of us spend almost half the time we're awake listening to verbal messages. (7) It's impossible to keep our attention totally focused for this amount of time. (8) Preoccupation (9) Another reason we don't always listen carefully is that we're often wrapped up in personal concerns that seem more important than the messages that others are sending. (10) It's hard to pay attention to someone when you're worrying about an upcoming exam or thinking about the great time you plan to have over the next weekend. (11) Rapid Thought (12) Listening carefully is also difficult for a physiological reason. (13) Although we're capable of understanding speech at rates of up to 600 words per minute, the average person speaks only 100 to 150 words per minute. (14) Thus, we have mental ""spare time"" while someone is talking. (15) Lack of Training (16) Even if we want to listen well, we're often hampered by a lack of training. (17) A common but mistaken belief is that listening is like breathing—an activity that people do naturally. (18) The truth is that listening is a skill much like speaking: Virtually everyone does it, though few people do it well.
