Part A - Identify Claims, Reasoning, Evidence, and Rhetoric
Read the two texts: "Cato IV" and "Federalist No. 67." Then, compare the two arguments
by completing the four columns in the table:
1. Identify each author's central claim.
2. Describe how each author uses reasoning (deductive, inductive, or abductive) to
support their central claim.
3. Identify several pieces of evidence in each text that support each author's central
claim.
4. Identify several examples of rhetorical appeals and/or devices that each author uses
to be persuasive. You can use this resource on Rhetorical Devices to help you
.
TIP: Cato or Hamilton may state their claims directly, in which case you can simply quote
them by putting quotes around their exact words. Otherwise, summarize each author's
claim in your own words.
