The Pollution Problem

L. Hernandez

The planet is facing an enormous problem. Every year, over 14 billion tons of trash reach the ocean, harming both animal and plant life. It may seem as if there is nothing you can do about this problem, but think again. Here are some simple ways that you can help lower this amount.

Litter accumulates on the coast of Singapore.

Reduce
Avoid using items that produce unnecessary trash. For example, use cloth handkerchiefs and napkins instead of tissues or paper towels. Use real plates, cups, and silverware instead of disposable paper products. When you go to the grocery store, take along a few cloth bags so that you don’t have to use the store’s plastic bags. Drink water from reusable bottles instead of single-use ones.

Reuse
Another way to reduce the amount of trash you produce is to reuse old items in new ways. Empty jars, bottles, and boxes can be used to store items. Old boots and tennis shoes make unique flowerpots. Old clothing can be made into rags for cleaning. You can also make a habit of donating your old books, clothing, and electronic items so that they can be reused by someone else.

Recycle
The first step to proper recycling is to separate all recyclable items from the rest of your trash. Most of these include items made of paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, and glass. Have your parents check with your local garbage collecting service to see if they can collect these recyclable items from your home. If not, you can take them to a recycling center. Also, remember to look for items made of recycled materials.

Once you start making these small changes, it will become easier for you to do your part to help the environment. Your enthusiasm will also encourage others to do the same, and little by little we will all work together to solve our pollution problem.
