Marie is a three-year-old female patient who has been brought to Dr. Smiles office by her older brother, Bill, who is 27. Marie's mother Lisa had to stay home with a sick baby. Bill is concerned about the brown material on Marie's lower front tooth, the pain she has been complaining of, and the fever she has had since yesterday. Upon examination, the dentist finds a large amount of decay in Marie's mandibular right central incisor. Dr. Smiles also notes a swelling of the patient's lymph nodes under her chin. After radiographic examination, Dr. Smiles determines that the decay began on the surface of the tooth that was closest to the midline. However, it has now spread to the tongue side and also involves the biting surface of the tooth. This tooth will require root canal therapy and a crown to save it.
