You have read works from English authors that span from the 1600s to1900s, from the death of Queen Elizabeth to World War II. In each of these eras, we discussed specific philosophies and ideas that have come to symbolize the era. A short summary of each one is below: 17th–18th Century: The Restoration Period, known for elevating reason and rational thinking and structure. 18th Century: The Romantic Era, known for elevation of emotion, feeling, spontaneous response, and nature 19th Century: The Victorian Era, known for both a proper, restrained upper class and a dirty, impoverished lower class. Elevated hope and progress, as well as realism and critique 20th Century: The Modern Era, known for disillusionment and pushing boundaries in search of new art techniques All of these artistic and philosophical movements have impacted art and culture today. Choose one of the eras you have studied this semester and, using one of the works you have read, explain at least two ways this era has impacted culture today. Use your own experiences and observations of books, movies, art, architecture, or people to draw conclusions. For example, you could discuss how the Neoclassical Era's focus on rational thinking helped created satire, which is still widely used today to critique society, and elaborate by discussing a piece of satire you read in the course, as well as give an example of how you see satire used in your daily life.
