The Grand Rapids police were called in to investigate the
crime. But who could the culprit be? Even Shaw was
questioned. Police wondered if he might have paid
someone to steal the shoes in order to collect the
insurance money. However, the police strongly suspected
that the thief was someone who worked at the museum
because neither the museum's alarm system nor its
surveillance cameras were operating the night the shoes
were stolen. Detectives interviewed the entire museum
staff, but they could not prove the theft was an inside job.
The employees of the museum called
the police to investigate the crime.
The alarm and security cameras were
off when the theft took place.

shoes paid a thief to take them.
