The mafia has been displayed prominently in the entertainment mass media and often portrayed in ways that correspond with what Furman sociologist Paul Kooistra has called the "criminal as hero" or at least in an ambivalent manner, considering their level of criminal activity. He argues that in every culture, some criminals -- including ones who engage in heinous behavior -- become folk heroes or figures who receive some admiration (despite the knowledge they are doing wrong).
