Because the 17th Amendment to the Constitution said elections had to be more
democratic and have more candidates and choices.
Because many new states were added to the United States and there had to be more
candidates for them to vote for.
Because when the Federalist Party disappeared, Sectionalism replaced it and there
were candidates from each region of the country.
Because during the "Era of Good Feelings" many new political parties formed to
support James Monroe.
