POETRY: Langston Hughes composed this poem when he had just graduated high school, at the age of 17, while crossing the Mississippi River
by train outside his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri. He was inspired by what he saw and his relationship to the landscape and its history. Think
about a view that inspires you. Imagine you are looking out a particular window, at a particular landscape. Now write a poem about what you see
and how it influences your sense of self and place. The landscape can be real or imagined, but should be one to which you feel a connection. In
your poem, mimic Hughes's use of repetition, historical and geographical references, and first-person point of view.
