Jane Goodall is a well-respected animal researcher. She has researched animals for more than 50 years. She is best known for her work with chimpanzees.
Goodall was just 23 years old when she traveled to Africa. There, she met Dr. Louis Leakey, a famous anthropologist and paleontologist. He was interested in learning more about chimpanzees. Dr. Leakey believed Goodall was the best person to research them for him. Although Goodall had little experience with animal research, she was very curious about animals and had great patience. In her research, she observed how chimpanzees could make and use their own tools. Chimpanzees would carefully pick a stick, strip the leaves, and put it in a termite mound. Then, they would pull out the stick and eat the termites. As her research continued, Goodall started an effort to protect chimpanzees from harm. In addition, she urged people to protect the environment. Today, Goodall continues to spread her message around the world.
