Alexia is always looking for math in the world around us. She decided that she wanted to find math in the Bible. There are lots of ways to find math in the Bible, but today she decided to look at the chapters and verses in the book of Romans to see if she could find any patterns in the data. Use the data given in the table to answer the following questions. Round to the nearest tenth when necessary:
Find the mean, median, mode, and range of the number of verses per chapter in the book of Romans. Be sure to show how you arrived at your answers.
Find the 5 number summary for the number of verses per chapter in the entire book of Romans. (Recall that the 5-number summary is the minimum, lower quartile, median, upper quartile, and maximum.)
Be sure to show how you arrived at your answers.
Note: For Questions 3 and 4, you will be drawing the graphs on paper, taking a photo or scanning the images and then uploading your graph into the document. (Note: only hand drawn graphs will be accepted)
Instructions for inserting a photo into a Word document are:
Place your cursor where you would like to insert the photo in the document.
Click the “Insert” drop-down menu at the top of the page.
Choose “Image” Or “Picture” depending on your version of Word.
Select the location where your image is stored.
Select your photo and click either “Open” or “Insert.” Your photo should appear in the document!
3. Use your 5-number summary from question #2 to draw a box-and-whisker plot for your data. (Be sure that your number line has a consistent scale so it isn’t misleading.)
Create a histogram to display the disbursement of the number of verses in the book of Romans. Use a scale of 1-5, 6-10, 11-15, and so on.
5. Write a paragraph that answers the following questions:
a. Were there any outliers in the data? If so, what were they and what do they do to the data?
b. Which measure of central tendency do you feel most accurately describes the data? Be sure to validate your choice.
c. If you were explaining to a friend how many verses were, on average, in the book of Romans, what would you tell him/her? Why? (Use data from your answers in #3 and #4 to support your explanation.)
d. Did any data in this project stand out to you? Why or why not?
