It has been estimated that around 550 premature deaths each year occur due to acid rain. Additionally, sulfuric acid is one of the top five chemicals associated with acute chemical incidents, resulting in 318 injuries between 1999 and 2008. Acid rain, which contains high levels of nitric and sulfuric acid, can devastate the environment and human health. The wind carries pollutants and emissions over vast distances, making acid rain a worldwide problem. When the pH levels in rivers, streams, lakes, and soil are lowered due to acid rain, it takes a disastrous toll on the ecosystem. Many fish cannot survive in an acidic environment, and plants begin to die because the acid dissolves nutrients in the soil. Moreover, acid corrodes stone, rock, and infrastructure, posing risks to buildings and sculptures. Acid rain is a serious concern, and efforts to reduce its impact continue through regulations and environmental initiatives. My question is, why has this been a problem since 1999, and we are living in 2024?
