part 1 ditches either the pile of 16 or the pile of 17. Pull these off the jamboard. They will never come back on the board until the game is done. Think about what kinds of numbers 16 and 17 represent.

part 2. Then split the other pile into two groups (piles do not have to be equal, by rule, you can split them however you want.) Give the board to player 2

Player 2 looks at the total number in each of the 2 piles they are given.

Ditch one (remove it from the board)

then split the other pile into 2 groups. Give the board back to player 1.

Player 1 will then ditch a pile and split the other

Player 2 does the same.

Play continues until there is 1 rock left on the board, the person who can't "split" the last rock will lose. (You can ditch, but you can't split )

DO NOT OPENLY DISCUSS YOUR STRATEGY WITH ANYONE ON YOUR RESEARCH TEAM. Even simple hints can risk you winning the game.

Answer the questions below after playing several rounds against other people (don't play any one person more than once because if they lose they will watch what you do and then steal your strategy.

By the end of the day, you should decide

1. Do I want to be player 1 or player 2?

2. Which pile do I get rid of

3. What type of piles do I leave for my opponent?
