To a people overwhelmed by the sheer size of their
country, the growth of the railroad in the United States
opened new opportunities which even the dreamers of an
earlier age did not conceive. The steamboat traveled the
waterways but could not reach the landlocked interior of
the nation. Wagon trains were limited in capacity and in
speed of transport, and so was no wonder that the
coming of the railroad outstripped all rival forms of land
transportation. Trains made the shipment of material and
people a routine operation throughout the continent.
They hauled large volumes of a wide variety of goods at
high speeds on schedule. Because their rates were lower
than the other forms of land transportation, they made
