These readings will hopefully provide some idea of African-Americans’ circumstances prior to the Civil Rights Movement. They depict the obstacles and opposition blacks faced from fierce racists, the legal system, and the work world and even within themselves.

Emmett Till article: Bryant and Milam were the two men accused of murdering Emmett Till. William Huie was a journalist who interviewed the two murderers.
