Kay and her brother, Tom, were going to the downtown library for the afternoon. They walked into the cool, marbled room and Kay
looked
up at the painted ceiling.
She tugged on Tom's sleeve.
"Look, Tom. Look at how beautiful it is," Kay said, staring at the painted sky filled with silver stars and mythological heroes.
"That must have cost a pretty penny." Tom said as he went to put his books into the Book Returns bin.
Why does Tom say "that must have cost a pretty penny"?
1. He thinks that the painting cost too much effort and time.
2. He appreciates how hard the artist worked to paint the ceiling.
3. He imagines that a painting like that must be very expensive.
4. He believes that spending money on art is a good thing.
