A graffito is a work of art made with different layers of colored material. Artists scratch through one material to
reveal a different color beneath. Graffito is Italian for "scratched." In Italy, there are many examples of graffiti, the
plural of graffito. Many famous graffiti are from Roman times. These works of art often depicted religious themes.
Scribes in medieval times also used graffiti to decorate their manuscripts. Today, graffiti are still sometimes
scratched into the walls of buildings. More often, however, graffiti artists opt to use paint to create the layers of
color instead.
