Procedure Part 1: Changing the ForNewton’s Second Law Virtual Lab Pre-Lab Information Purpose Explore the effect of force and mass on the acceleration of an object. Question How do force and mass affect the acceleration of an object? Simulation Link Force and Fan Carts Gizmo Procedure Part 1: Changing the Force Applied to the Cart ● Hypothesis: If the force applied to a cart increases, then the acceleration of the cart increases when the mass of the cart is held constant, because force and acceleration are directly proportional to each other accorde Applied to the Cart ● Hypothesis: If the force applied to a cart increases, then the acceleration of the cart increases when the mass of the cart is held constant, because force and acceleration are directly proportional to each other according to Newton’s second law. ● Independent Variable: Force applied to the cart ● Dependent Variable: Acceleration of the cart ● Constant: Mass of the cart 1. Run the simulation of Low fan speed to determine the acceleration of the cart. Use the following parameters in your setup. a. Low fan speed b. No Friction c. Place the textbook on the cart. 2. Open the Data tab and select the Speed and Line graph buttons. 3. Click the play button. Let the cart run past the finish line. 4. Once the cart crosses the finish line, record the data from the “Speed data” table in Table A in the Low fan speed column. Record the total elapsed time (bottom left of the Gizmo, next to the play button), and the final speed (bottom right of the Gizmo, under the speedometer) in the table. 5. Calculate the change in velocity of the cart. Use the following formula: Δv = vf – vi, Where Δv is the change in velocity, vf is the final speed, and vi is the starting velocity. 6. Calculate the acceleration of the cart. Use the following formula: a = Δv/Δt Where a is the acceleration, Δv is the change in velocity, and Δt is the time elapsed. 7. Press the reset button (next to the pause button). 8. Repeat steps 1-7 except change the fan speed to Medium and High.
