An emerald was discovered on a farm in North Carolina. The precious gem was found by a man named Terry
Ledford. It may be the biggest emerald ever found in North America. Ledford had the emerald cut to look like a
famous one. That well-known emerald was worn by Catherine the Great. She was a Russian leader in the late
1700s. Ledford's cut jewel ended up being nearly 65 carats. It is a little larger than a quarter. It is about as heavy
as an AA battery.
