INFORMATIONAL TEXT-2/4
The Industrial Revolution was a time of growth. One
industry that contributed a great deal to the Industrial
Revolution was the iron industry. Iron could be used to
make many important items, like bridges. Iron also could
be used to make steel. Steel was very useful because of its
lightness and strength. The Industrial Revolution was
supported by the use of iron and steel.
In the mines of eighteenth century England, there was a lot
of iron ore. This raw material was used to make iron. In
order to make useful iron, it has to be smelted. This is
when the iron is separated from the ore. This used to take
a long time. But the British found a way to make it faster.
Once the iron was smelted, they could shape it by melting
it. In this way, they could make tools and parts for
machines. The tools were helpful but they weren't perfect.
They often broke or cracked.
