Sea slugs are herbivorous animals that feed off plankton,
decaying matter, and algae. The Elysia chlorotica (shown
here) is a green sea slug, with a leaf-shaped body that
acquires energy through photosynthesis like a plant. The
Elysia chlorotica sea slug stores chloroplast in the cells that
line its gut. These chloroplasts, that convert sunlight to
energy, come from the algae it eats. This sea slug lives up
to a year without having to eat. If you had the ability to
produce your own food like a plant instead of having to
consume food every day for energy, how might that change
your life?
