Berger Syndrome, named after the man who discovered the disorder, is a mild form of autism. There are many different
symptoms
of Asperger
Syndrome, including an inability to understand social cues; painful sensitivity to sound, light, or touch; an
obsessive interest in a
subject to the exclusion of everything else; and extreme difficulty in communicating with other people.
The disorder was
added to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-
IV) in 1994.
Emerging research shows that the teenage years can be especially difficult for those diagnosed with the disorder. One case
study, conducted at St. John's Teaching Hospital, shows that Asperger teens with a strong support system handle the pressures
of high school better than those who are left without support. During the high school years, segregation from their peers can be
harmful for Asperger teens. Today, many teachers and principals receive training about the issues surrounding Asperger
Syndrome.
