Question 1
Missy is desperate to become a contestant on the ‘Friendship Island’ television reality show and is
very excited to be invited for an interview. Twenty-nine other people have been invited and out of
these, 10 people will get through to make it onto the live television show.
Missy is nervous as she waits with the others. One girl, Sharon, sits beside her and smiles. Missy
says ‘Don’t you even think about being friendly! That’s not what I am here for!’ Sharon looks
shocked by this and moves away without saying anything.
The first task for the would-be contestants is to race across a sandy beach wearing wellingtons.
‘Remember’ says the host, Rebecca, ‘That only the first 20 people will go through to the next task.
Make sure you are one of the 20 – no holds barred!’ Missy sees Sharon in front of her and pushes
Sharon so that she falls onto the soft sand. Sharon isn’t hurt, but she misses out on a place in the top
20 finishers and has to go home.
Later that evening, in their hotel, a man called Tanvir approaches Missy as she is having a drink at
the bar. Tanvir says ‘I saw you push Sharon over, that was really mean.’ Missy jumps up and waves
her fist in Tanvir’s face ‘I can do more than push if you don’t leave me alone!’ she shouts. Tanvir is
alarmed and steps backwards. He trips over a table and sprains his ankle as he falls. Tanvir’s friend,
a man called Rob, runs forward and grabs Missy’s arm, saying, ‘Hey, calm down! Look what you
have done!’ Missy, grabs her drink from the table and smashes the glass on the table edge. She
pushes the broken glass into Rob’s face. An ambulance is called and Rob is taken to hospital,
bleeding heavily. Rob loses the sight in one eye and has to have extensive surgery to repair his
injured face.
Missy is arrested. She says she didn’t mean to injure Rob.
