Herman, age 50, a college professor in the Math Department, has just been seen at your outpatient mental health clinic where he is a frequent patient. He has been experiencing intermittent periods of somatic symptoms for 3 years. He insists that his frequent cough is a sign of lung cancer. His primary care provider insists that his lung x-ray is clear! He takes many sick days from work as a result of his perceived illness. He may lose his position as a result of all of the time he has missed. He has few friends, chronic low self-esteem, and no family support. He is extremely fearful and very anxious that his diagnosis of lung cancer will be announced soon. His doctor does not agree with this prognosis. All of his lab and x-ray results have been negative for any type of illness. His nursing care plan includes several nursing interventions such as attendance at group meetings three times a week, meeting with his nurse for a discussion of current symptoms, and convening with his psychiatrist for additional interventions, including medications.
