An infant presented to the emergency room with persistent diarrhea, fever, dehydration, and was lethargic. The condition of the child was severe enough for admittance into the hospital. After several tests the doctors were able to determine the child had an intestinal bacterial infection but they were unable to determine the specific bacteria causing the symptoms. Because the bacteria was unknown, doctors administered several rounds of different antibiotics to the child over several days/weeks. However, the bacterial cultures were still showing growth (the bacteria was still present within the intestines) after every antibiotic treatment. The child continued to get worse over this time. As the prescribing physician or nurse in charge of this child's care, you likely would at least know that the bacteria infecting this child was gram-negative.
