The Mexican-American War The Mexican-American War (1846-1848) was one of the most controversial wars in which the U.S. has participated. American leaders and intellectuals such as Thoreau, (future president) General Grant, and (future president) Lincoln voiced their opposition to the war. Although this war did expand U.S. territory significantly by taking at least two Mexican states, it did so at a cost. After studying the situation carefully, write a letter to the editor of a major American newspaper, arguing either for or against the Mexican War. In your letter, thoroughly cover the following: Are you for or against the war and why? What issues does this war present? What potential problems do you see down the road in the U.S.? What modifications, if any, do you argue the U.S. should take in its relationship with Mexico? What moral and economic issues are at stake?
