Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, was a chemist, engineer, businessperson and writer. On November 27, 1895, he signed his last will and testament, a document that outlined how he wanted his estate, including a vast fortune, to be distributed upon his death. Just a year later, Alfred Nobel died. In the document, he indicated that he would leave the majority of his estate to establish an award, called the Nobel Prize, that would celebrate the accomplishments of individuals in the areas of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and peace. The first award was given out in 1901, five years after Nobel’s death.
