Before the discovery of penicillin, there was not an effective treatment for many types of illnesses. But that changed with an accidental finding in 1928. Professor Alexander Fleming returned to his work at a hospital and noticed that many of his science samples had been contaminated with mold. Fleming also noticed that the bacteria he had been growing in the small glass dishes was eradicated by the mold. He decided to isolate the mold, grow new bacteria, and repeat the process. When he duplicated the procedure, he concluded that this particular strain of mold might be helpful in treating bacteria-based illnesses. Further studies determined that the mold, now called penicillin, could be turned into an effective medicine which would help an immeasurable number of people.
