Read the excerpt from "A Black Hole Is NOT a Hole" by Carolyn Cinami DeCristofano.

Any material in space causes a distortion of some sort. A small concentration of matter results in a tiny dimple. A higher concentration makes a deeper dent. Each indentation is the gravity zone around the object. Near the object, the distortion is greatest. The stretchy threads of the space fabric are bent by the effect of the mass on space. Farther and farther away, this effect is smaller and smaller, and so the threads are straighter and straighter.
