In an exercise to estimate the partition coefficient (Ko) of iodine (12) between water and kerosine, a 2.50g of iodine was first dissolved in a 5.0ml saturated potassium iodide solution and then topped up with distilled water to make a 25cm³ solution. The 25ml aqueous iodine solution was transferred into a separatory funnel and shaken vigorously with 20ml of kerosine. After equilibration, the aqueous layer was drained off into a volumetric flask and titrated with 0.23 mol/L Na2S2O3 using starch as indicator. The titre recorded at the end-point was 12.0mL.
