Question 1 I: Tell me about a time in which you felt effective as a manager. S: The first thing that comes to mind is back in... Starting in the summer a few years ago, I was working as a sales rep at XYZ Computer. And, I was calling on XYZ Computer dealers in New England. And, they... as usual went through a huge reshuffling, and restructuring. I ended up, in effect coming out of the thing... lot of people got laid off but I ended up with more responsibility, and ended up with a better job after the lay-offs, and all the dust had settled. I ended up covering a lot larger territory-- Ncw England, I covered from Boston to Buffalo. What ended up happening was that I went from working for a boss who sat like, you know, two desks down from me in the Boston office to reporting to a guy named Peter in New York City, and my regional manager was in Denver, Colorado. I felt that when I had some of the constraints removed from me, of having to work in just the Boston office with eight people... They even changed the commission plan. The prior situation was eight people covered Boston and we were on this team commission plan. (5.1) Everyone had their own assigned dealers, and you were paid by how much they were able to sell through for XYZ. Depending on the dealers you had, you could do better or worse. But, we were all on this... we called it the Socialist Comp plan, so you could be doing very well, and somebody else could be doing very poorly, but we all made the same amount of money because it was this team thing .
