Turn on and double-click the Human Impact folder. The oceans make up the
largest percentage of the hydrosphere by volume. They have also been impacted
by centuries of use by human populations.
The data in the Human Impacts folder illustrate the severity of impact seen
throughout the oceans around the world. Economic activities (for example, large-
scale fishing) and the effects of industrial pollution are included in an index of 17
potential adverse impacts, as measured by the National Center for Ecological
Analysis and Synthesis. These impacts were then mapped and classified into six
impact categories, as noted in the legend at the bottom of the 3D Viewer.
Examine the spatial patterns of impacts, noting areas where human activities
have caused the greatest degradation of ocean ecosystems.
