The Design of Storage and Handling Systems
Question 1
You are asked to design a warehouse layout for a local company in Paarl called
LWV Consult (Pty) Ltd. The owner wants storage for 1000 pallets in his 720m²
warehouse. According to your research, racks are the most economical storage
method. You also have determined that the existing warehouse was designed to
have 7 rows of racks.
To accommodate your client's needs you should be able to fit 10 rows of racks.
Each row of racks should be 5 spaces high and 20 racks long. The racks should
be placed next to each other. The pallets are placed in the rack spaces with a
reach truck, which requires a 2,85m aisle. To provide the storage space the area
that is required is determined as follows:
Each rack occupies (single space for a pallet of goods):
1,25m from front to back (depth)
1,25m from side to side (length)
1,85m from top to bottom (height)
(measure 2)

You are required to work out the floor space needed to accommodate the total
amount of racks needed. You should also be
able to advise LWV Consult (Pty)
Ltd if they should expand their store to accommodate
the 10 rows of 20 racks on
the existing site.
