Meditation 3: Let's consider a recommendor system that matches people as good prospective
roommates for a college dorm room. Each person completes a survey o questions, answering cach
with a-1, 0 or 1, to try and determine their habits relevant to getting along with another roommate.
Let's suppose the questions are
1. My room is generally-1 (messy) to 1 (immaculate)
2. I usually wake up at -1 (6am or later) to 1 (10am or later)
3. I generally go to bed at -1 (by 10pm) ti 1 (by 2am or later)
4. When home I like the noise level to be -1 (absolute silence) to 1 (TV or Music all the time)
Suppose 5 people take the survey and their responses are
-(1,0,-1,1)
=(0,1,-1,0)
=(-1,-1,-1,-1)
=(1,1,1,1)
=(1,1,-1,1)
So for example, the 4th survey taker generally goes to bed by 2am or later. Complete the following
(a) First, let's check that you understand how the data is organized. Does the 2nd survey Laker
get up carly or
late?
(b) Determine, using our basic recommendor system scheme, which other of the survey takers
might be the best
roommate for the Ist survey taker.
(e) For the match you got for the first survey taking in the previous part, explain which habits
they have in common
and which habits they do not have in common.
