Why is metformin not useful in patients with type 1 DM (IDDM)?
- Because IDDM can only be treated with desmopressin
- It increases insulin sensitivity, which is not pathologically low in IDDM
- It reduces the synthesis of new glucose in the liver, but patients with IDDM often have liver failure so effects on the liver need to be avoided
- It decreases blood sugar levels, which are not abnormally high in patients with untreated IDDM
