Direct democracy  

  • In this type of democracy, citizens exercise their power directly by voting for policies and important decisions without representatives or houses of parliament.
  • In this type of democracy the citizens decide the fate of their own country by voting on issues. Laws to be passed by the government have to be voted for by the people.

  • The parliament chooses the head of the government known as the prime minister who may be removed through a bill of no confidence.  

Authoritarian democracy  

  • A type of democracy where the elites are the only people who are part of the parliamentary process.
  • Citizens are allowed to vote for their chosen candidate, however, regular citizens cannot participate in the elections.

Participatory Democracy  

  • This is a type of democracy that strives to create an opportunity for all members of a population to make important contributions towards the decision making process.  

Islamic democracy  

  • It seeks to apply Islamic law to public policies, while maintaining a democratic framework.
  • In this type of democracy, the leaders are elected by people, everyone is subject to sharia laws and the leaders must commit to practicing Shura.
