It is difficult to determine exactly what the New Left achieved in the American political system especially following the fracturing a decline of the movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s. However, the New Left was largely responsible for reinvigorating a generation of young Americans in the political system to fight for change in areas from the economy, to the War in Vietnam. Eventually increased pressure from activists and ordinary citizens forced the U.S. to end its military efforts in Vietnam. The ending of the Vietnam War can be seen as a result of efforts that were started by the New Left movement years before. Other achievements of the New Left were in the area of environmentalism. The New Left tried to increase the awareness of environmental issues in the American public. An example of this was the establishment of Earth Day in 1970.
