The Industrial Revolution began in the North. It began there for many reasons. One of them was the Free Enterprise System where people could buy, sell, and produce whatever they want; as long as it was legal. The North needed to makemoney, and since they had poor soil, they came up with other ways to make it. That is why it started in the U.S.
In a free society, people own most of the country's resources and private markets determine the best use for these resources. Free enterprise works because it allows people to do what they do best and trade for the rest.
