A democracy is a government in which the citizens take a part in the decision making.  Education contributes to a successful democracy because, as the citizens are included in the decisions being made, the more educated citizens are (and the more they know about their country and the world), the more fit they are for taking part in voting.  Uneducated citizens would be less able to make the best decisions for their country without being fully aware of the situation.
