The Battle of Vicksburg was a battle during the American Civil War, in which the Union Army succeeded in driving the Confederate Army of Mississippi into the defensive lines surrounding Vicksburg, Mississippi.
This was the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi River, and capturing it completed the "Anaconda Plan" of the Union Army. The garrison finally surrendered on July 4.
