Lipids have long been used as lamp oil and along with candles were the main fuel for pre-industrial light sources. Whale oil was one of the main fuels harvested and fueled the 19th century whaling industry leading to widespread endangerment of various species. This practice is now outlawed except in a number of countries which mostly hunt whales for cultural purposes.
