West: The completion of the transcontinental railroad completed the connection between the east and the west during the 2nd industrial revolution.
Midwest: Chicago became the rail gateway from the East to the West. Rails laid allowed for steel mined in the north to be transported down to the midwest states where, it would be manufactured into the parts and tools needed, then it would be transported across the great plains to the west and south.
