Temptation can often be distracting, and perhaps simpler to follow than reaching ones perhaps more serious goal. This stems from the fact that many peoples mindset is continuously stuck in phase that tells that short term reward is greater than a long term loss or punishment. This is actually why many teens have difficulty focusing on school due to social media or instant messaging. They see the opportunity to be recognized by another, or many others, which at this mental stage/point in life, means they are seeking the short term reward(being recognized). However, that means they miss out on the long term benefit(their education) and may not be able to accomplish their goals.
P.S. This almost made me feel like you just didn't want to write a paper, so I just put in an pull out from the psychology paper I wrote for class. :)
